PENTHOUSE SWEET: A Tribute to Bob Guccione
The realm of adult entertainment grieves the loss of magazine mogul and xxx pioneer Bob Guccione. His skin empire set the precedence for countless knock off publications, movie productions and signature toy lines. Adapting to Hugh Hefner’s brainchild of catering to a specific demographic; Guccione’s answer to the sophisticated, slick society was pushing the perversion envelope. Penthouse was born in England in 1965.
Centerfolds nick named Penthouse Pets (Guccione’s version of Hefner’s Playboy Playmates) boasted a soft, unfocused photographed look derived from his artistic painting experience. Operating on a shoestring, he often under took the photography tasks himself. He was the first to illustrate female pubic hair, exposed vulva and anus. Like wildfire, the nudie rag spread, creating its North American market in 1969. Aptly enough, the hippy generation was promoting peace and free love. Penthouse was a welcome distraction from G.I. Blues and coping with the Vietnam war.
The peace, love and anti-war era proved to be highly lucrative time for Guccione. Soon he owned the largest private residence in Manhattan boasting 27 000 square feet. Bob’s home hosted numerous parties although completely different from the wild soirees in the legendary Playboy mansion. He preferred a serene atmosphere. Once he reportedly ejected a guest for simply diving into the pool fully clothed.
Where the swinging sixties wound down, the sexploitation seventies kicked into high gear. Again Guccione embarked upon innovation and produced the highly controversial film Caligula, a tale about the depraved lifestyle of the Roman’s. The Hollywood big budget feature carried a cast of well known actors such as Malcolm McDowell and Peter O’Toole. The film was deemed as far too graphic for American audiences, given an x-rating and banned in many states. Many adult stars and starlets of today are able to make the cross over into mainstream entertainment as a result of Mr. Bob Guccione simply paving the road to get there.
Making international headlines once again, fully nude, unauthorized photos were published of newly crowned Miss America Vanessa Williams. The pagent’s strict policy forced Williams to reliquish her title citing the explicit photos were conflict of interest to the pagent’s wholesome image. Debate still initiates to this day that Williams may not have seen such a plateau of fame if it were not for the Penthouse photo spread.
1984 also sparked the flame that would eventually blaze beyond epic proportion with yet more unauthorized, pre-fame nude photos of pop music newcomer Madonna. Yes before there was Truth or dare, prior to Like a Prayer, even pre-Like a Virgin there were nude photos spreads of Madonna. One has to ponder if this edition was consequential in unleashing a future societal sex icon.
By the time the nineties arrived, Penthouse was observed as having its first era of profit loss. Speculation can only be offered this is due by and large to the introduction of the internet. Bob Guccione eventually sold his enterprise to individual shareholders. In ceremonious fashion he once again created the dawn of a new era being the first North American publication to show full penetration and fetish content such as urination and ejaculate facials.
As we celebrate our liberated sex and sexuality, express our unique preferences and play, its paramount to give proper credit to the Larry Flynts, the Hugh Hefners and of course the Bob Gucciones that opened a world of pleasure and bliss we would not experience quite the same without their visions and gestures.
It is true we have lost an innovator and pioneer in Bob Guccione to lung cancer two months shy of his 80th birthday. I encourage you, grieve not his passing but celebrate the love and freedom he’d given and never pass up the chance to spread the pleasure.
Bob was married three times and is survived by his two children Tonia and Bob Jr.
Bob Guccione also founded Omni, Viva, Longevity and Spin Magazine. He began Penthouse Forum and internationally famous Penthouse letters.
Numerous adult starlets have gotten their break through by Penthouse or it enhanced their career to epic proportion by posing as Penthouse Pets including: Taylor Wane, Dyanna Lauren, Nikki Tyler, Rocki Roads, Samantha Phillips, Nikita, Vicca, Silvia Saint, Tera Patrick, Sunny Leone, Brianna Banks, Ava Vincent, Jenna Jameson, Stormy Daniels, Jessica Jaymes, Kayden Kross, Audrey Bitoni, Kagney Linn Karter, Nikki Benz, Isis Taylor, Phoenix Marie among countless others.
The following had this they wished to express in tribute of Bob Guccione:
Dyanna Lauren: A great man that gave us so much. He so loved art. Yes he will be very missed. RIP Bob
Chris King: Bob was a pioneer in pushing the envelope so to speak. The fifties had Hefner and his beginnings that started strong featuring Marilyn Monroe.
Guccione wanted to bring a little more to the readers.
It was (I believe 1968) and he ventured forth to both shoot and write Penthouse magazine.
Quickly, he saw the serious involvement each department needed and hired newcomer at the time, Ken Marcus (the understudy of Ansel Adams himself…)
The magazine picked up pace with style and an edge readers couldn’t get enough of. I remember seeing it as a kid in the seventies and wishing someday I could be the man behind the lens.
I believe it was a winter 1979 edition of a gorgeous brunette who was quoted saying, “Fucking is a great way to break the ice when you meet someone…”
That became my motto in the eighties when I started dating.
My passion for beautiful women and the skills I acquired over the years has led me to not only shoot for Penthouse magazine and video but every magazine I read as a kid. All of that due to Bob Guccione himself.
The commercials he put out in the eighties were sexy, powerful and addicting. I’d ask myself often, “How do I get to be a part of this world???”
Investors took over the company in the twenty first century, but internationally and eternally, Bob Guccione will be known as PENTHOUSE.
Now and forever.
C’mon, can you really get in an elevator, see the button on the panel that says “penthouse” and NOT think of the amazing legend this man has left earth? He will be greatly missed.
Sammy Phillips: R.I.P. Bob, my prayers are with all your family and friends at this time, we all miss you very much. Your legacy lives on…

I have been receiving 3 mags since I turned 18: Car and driver, Hustler and Penthouse. I love the way the pics are shot in penthouse. Usually some sort of theatrics or story telling. They seemed to have a certain glam touch to them. The make up was heavy but very tastful the costumes were very artfull. it wasnt just some random chick getting naked by a pool. This man had a taste that i related to very much.
Also i know this might sound weird but the magizine itself had a nice feel to the paper and it took the print ink very well and didnt ever seem to fade out. I hope these things do not dissapear over time now that he is gone.
Edencafe contributor: Jon Elwood I have to agree with Jason, the forums and the special edition Penthouse letters were the best.
Growing up, my father always bought one, and would always stash them in the same place after he was done reading them. Now, me being the curious little —- that I was always nosed around in them, what can I say…..I was a typical kid. I loved looking at the naked bodies of the various models at first, but after looking up every possible word in the dictionary plus the encyclopedias to know what was what and what was where it was….!
Ya ok so I loved learning about the female body. When I discovered the forums, I gained information that put me well beyond anyone in my class, though I never let it be known as small towns in the mid-west aren’t too big on open ideas like sex.
Some of my most fondest memories are reading about something that was wrote, then looking it up and putting two and two together. I think the funniest part of it was when my sister had her period, I out of the blue looked at her and said she’d be better off using tampons cause I overheard her and mom talking about the fact that she hates using pads as she felt like she was wearing a diaper. (laughs….) they both just looked at me trying to figure out how an 11 year old boy knew about tampons let alone what they were used for.

Penthouse did more for toys than you probably realize. My friend and one of my inspirations, Ray Cirino, who created a line called Inner Space created amazing toys for the center spreads.
Ray created a whole bird menagerie with plumbed plugs, a sexy two female cello, like a surrealist painting come to life, complete with strings, and so much more.
My words can’t give these epic visions of sex toys the beauty and respect they deserve.
Guccione gave us fantasies of what could be and created a budget that allowed an artist to create never seen before sextoy art.
I’m deeply indebted to this man I unfortunately never got to meet.

when i was a child my male cousin’s and brother would hide after searching out a treasure chest of my uncle’s collected editions of penthouse.
Curious to the hoopla i to found myself gazing upon the pages of these beautiful naked silloettes and secretively exploring my body in search of vague similarities.
Not only did Penthouse get a rise outta the boys but it help me discover myself.
I practiced the poses , i groomed in the manner to which i had seen and carried with me that “Want to be soft like those girls” feeling throughout my teenage and adult years.
The images I saw were magical and beautiful -i saw lines, and silk , beautiful people, fantastical portraits threw the eyes of another.
Penthouse was this girls guide to self awareness, and yes i too feel a great loss for Bob Guccione.
I move like i move cause his visions showed me how…
God Bless
Dave
Thank you both for your input. Yes its truly staggering at just how many lives one can truly touch through the right media. Guccione’s innovative vision truly opened countless doors towards our freedom at expression and liberating sexuality
