I’ve never been much for New Year’s Resolutions. Oh sure, I physically make the New Year’s Resolution almost every year, but it never takes long for me to actually give up on ever accomplishing the resolution. Almost always, my New Year’s Resolution includes the idea of losing weight.

I’ve never liked the idea of losing weight as a New Year’s Resolution. It just doesn’t seem like the right time to be doing it. I mean, it’s great to turn over a “new leaf” in time for the New Year, but I’ve never been one who has thought that the New Year’s Resolution to lose weight has ever really worked for anyone. Yes, people seem to do it for a couple months (if that), but then they go right back to their old habits. Losing weight just for the sake of the new year has never seemed to work out for anyone I know.

Of course, it doesn’t help that retail loves to capitalize on that little “losing weight” ideal. It was one of my biggest annoyances when I worked at Wal-Mart. There were “fitness sets” all over the store right before New Year’s and afterwards. Unsurprisingly, they flew off the shelves. I think people have the idea that, if they didn’t make any other resolutions, they might as well at least try to lose weight; it always seems to be the most common resolution. It’s just really sad that companies would use that to their advantage just to try and sell products.

I don’t think losing weight is going to be a resolution for me this year. I suck at losing weight in the traditional sense; I really do. I’ve lost over 90 pounds in a couple months after starving myself but that really doesn’t seem like the best way to go about doing it. However, that’s exactly what “losing weight” means to me. It means focusing on the numbers as a way to try and get down to a lower body weight. When regular changes in diet and exercise don’t work, I do what I have to to try and get those numbers down. As such, my “diets” always end up as some horrible starvation session. (Which is actually pretty effective to losing weight if you know how to do it.)

However, I think, for this year, my New Year’s Resolution isn’t going to focus on losing weight. Instead, I’m going to focus more on getting healthier. I watched a television show the other night with Dr. Oz helping people to be more healthy. The idea was to bring down your waist size instead of paying attention to the pounds since weight around the midsection is a sign of bad health. The doctor had all of his participants doing some light exercise, eating better, and just making sure to walk at least 10,000 steps a day. I think that’s the route I want to go.

I can never manage to completely diet, so I’m not going to expect myself to just eat a banana for every meal. I couldn’t do it. However, portion control is a huge reason of why I don’t lose weight. When I want McDonalds, I get a large. It wouldn’t hurt me, instead, to get a small or medium. In fact, I probably could find something home-cooked that would be just as tasty as McDonalds.

Exercise is always the bane of my existence as well. I can manage to keep up a rigorous training program for a little while, but it always comes back to my regular routine of no exercise. I think changing it to the goal of just walking 10,000 steps a day will make it into a fun competition instead of having to feel that put out by the idea of it. After all, if I just walk around a bit more at work, I probably could end up meeting my 10,000 step quota. I think I’ll ask the boyfriend to attempt this with me, and we’ll see if we both can’t get a little healthier.

Aside from the weight ideal, I think I’m going to attempt to set a goal for continuing to sex blog through the rest of the new year. I’ve really enjoyed blogging this last year, and I think I want to continue to keep up the blog, even if it seems hard, for the new year. Some sex bloggers out there have had their blog up for four or five years, and while I’m not sure I’ll be able to manage that, I do want to attempt to keep it up for quite a few. I want to continue to post regular updates to my personal blog as well; journaling has always been a way for me to relieve stress, and while I love writing, I sometimes find that it falls by the wayside of life. I want to continue to post updates even when I get busy.

As another sex-related resolution, I think I’d like to resolve to have more variety in my sex life. I know, that sounds really awkward coming from someone who reviews sex toys for a hobby, but I always find that the boyfriend and I fall into the same patterns when it comes to sex. I’d really like to try and mix all of that up including more oral sex. I’d also love to be able to do more g-spot play as well as even (hopefully) learning how to do female ejaculation this year. We’ll see though.

Sometimes I do feel like New Year’s Resolutions are kind of stupid. Instead of looking at it that way though, I try to look at it more as an opportunity to modify and expand the goals I have for myself for the New Year. Instead of looking at it like the “time” to do something, I look more at it as the yearly point where I need to look at the goals I have for the new year and figure out what I want to do to meet them. This makes New Year’s Resolutions look more useful to me.

I think that’s a great way to look at it. Focus on getting healthier, not lighter. Typically, you will lose some weight in the process, but I’ve improved my health in a major way while only losing about 25-30 lbs. I think making little changes is the way to go. I started out only drinking water. No more sodas, sweet tea, juices, milk or other beverages aside from very rare occasions. If I do have them it’s infrequent on top of usually having a version with artificial sugar (mostly because the real stuff has lots of calories). I ate on smaller plates (sandwich plates instead of dinner plates) to help control my portions. It seems like you’re eating more when you eat on a smaller plate.

I hope you can reach your goals. It can be really disappointing when we don’t. I’m sure you are capable of doing it though. =)
