My Valentine’s Throughout the Years
As open minded as I am, I’m still a very traditional girl when it comes to holidays. I fantasize about them being perfect from decorations and good food to the celebration itself. Valentine’s Day is probably my favorite holiday. I love pink and a day that is centered around my favorite color would have to be the best day ever!
My very first experience with Valentine’s Day was in the first grade. At least, that’s the first time I really recall having a grasp on what it was all about. I had an enormous crush on Matthew, a six year old with spikey hair, big blue eyes and a scar over his eyebrow. He was so funny and cute. When I filled out my Barbie Valentine cards to give out to my classmates, I made sure to pick my favorite one for him, taking extra care to write his name as neatly as I could. He gave me a card with a red sucker that said “Be Mine” on it. I was in love. We moved on to different schools the next year, which is pretty normal when you grow up in a military town. I think I may have seen him a few years later as I was driving past the Methodist church uptown, but we never spoke again. My grandmother still has the card he gave me in one of my photo albums at her house. It brings back warm memories when I flip through it.
In sixth grade I met Jimmy. He had curly brown hair, soft brown eyes and a smile that gave me butterflies. Everyone knew I had a crush on him. On Valentine’s Day that year I was out sick from school. I spend the following weekend at my best friend Casey’s house. There was a small heart-shaped box on her dresser and I asked her if I could have a piece of the candy from inside it. She told me that it was mine anyway and that Jimmy was going to give it to me at school an ask me to be his girlfriend. Since I wasn’t there he asked her to give it to me and she ate all my chocolates! Jimmy and I flirted some more for the rest of the school year, but he and Casey both moved away that year.
In the eight grade there was Johnnie. I wasn’t really allowed to be with him because my grandparents (who I lived with at the time) did not approve of interracial relationships. I would go to Johnnie’s house on my bike after school all the time. We hung out with our friends mostly, but he actually took me on my first group date and gave me my first real kiss! It was a quick little peck but my lips were warm and tingly all the way home. By that age Valentine’s day was a big deal to everyone. Girls would be walking around school with teddy bears, balloons and chocolates to show off to all of their friends. Johnnie wrote me a strange note with a weird story about poop. He was a pretty weird guy now that I think about it. Fortunately my friend Kenton gave me a bear so I didn’t feel like a complete loser. Johnnie and I remained acquaintances until we graduated and we are face book friends, but we haven’t spoken much in years.
When I graduated from high school I met and fell in love with Chad. He was so hot, though he was a bit strange. He talked about poop when I met him too. It’s probably a good idea to not talk about poop to girls you like. I appreciated his awkwardness though and our relationship progressed quickly. I got pregnant a few months into our relationship. I was very excited that he wanted to go ahead and get married. We wound up having our wedding as close to Valentine’s day as I could get it. We were young, broke and in love but we managed to make the best of things, pulling off a nice celebration. One year we took a trip to Savannah, GA (where I grew up) and stayed on River Street. As time went on and we had more children we weren’t able to afford such elaborate trips.
This year we’re making up for that.
We’ve reserved a room at a luxurious bed & breakfast in Asheville, NC for an entire week. We’re going to spend this time reconnecting, rekindling our romance, eating delicious truffles and chocolate covered strawberries, renewing our vows to each other, dining out and having amazing sex. I’ve splurged on sexy lingerie for each night of the trip and we’re getting plenty of oils, candles and toys to bring along with us. We’ve decided that since we’re in a place where we’re able to handle this financially that we’re going to make sure to do it every year, because it’s important to make time for each other. It’s fun to get away from everything and just be a couple, minus the kids, the mortgage and the pets for a short while. I’m looking forward to Valentine’s day this year and I’m hoping it is the start of many more wonderful holiday celebrations for us.
