It’s… Prom Time?

It’s… Prom Time?

Indeed it is, all around the world.   And while most of us are a bit old to be worrying about proms and prom dates, have been out of high school for awhile (or a long while!) and no longer have to deal with all that angst, Constance McMillan is not so lucky.

Featured on the Bust blog today, Constance recently got up  the nerve to ask her highschool to allow her to dress in a tux and bring her girlfriend to prom.  The school?  Cancelled prom instead.

Constance talks about her ordeal on the CBS Early Show:

I know our Eden Cafe readers will want to show their support of this blatant discrimination and you can do that in a bunch of ways.  Become a fan of the “Let Constance Take her Girlfriend to Prom” page on Facebook.  Or email the members of the Itawanba County School District.

Or share your own prom stories!

In an effort to bring attention to this — and to make prom fun again! — we’re having a little contest.

We challenge you to blog about your own prom, your horror stories or romantic reminiscences.  What it was like for you in the 60′s, the 80′s, last year; whenever you went to — or chose not to go to — prom.

Post stories.  Post pictures.  Put on your best prom dress or tux now and show us a before and after picture.  Have fun with it!  Don’t have a blog?  Post on Facebook!

Just post.  Somewhere, post about prom.  And include a link back to this post when you do.  Let’s not only have some fun with this, but let’s bring some attention to the discrimination that is being perpetrated by the Itawamba school district against not only Constance but same sex couples in general.

We’re going to run this for the entire month of March with the winner to be announced April 1st.  Best pictures, post, story or combo of the three wins a $100 Eden Fantasys gift card.

The only rules are:

  1. Mention Constance and her situation somewhere in your post.  You can describe the situation or just tag your photos “for Constance and her battle against same sex couple discrimination!”
  2. Link back to this post somewhere in your post.  Let folks know we’re sponsoring this and point them to the rules for joining in.
  3. Come back and leave a link to your post in the comments section so we know where to find your post. Without a link we won’t know you posted!

That’s it.  Easy as can be.  And you have 19 days to enter.  Winner will be announced on Twitter so be sure to follow us and keep your eyes peeled on April 1st!

Now get busy.  Go support Constance!

*update* According to Bust, Constance has, since this began, appeared on the Ellen Degeneres show and been given a $30,000 scholarship and internship from tonic.com. Amazingly, Ellen has renewed the scholarship for three years, leaving Constance well and truly set for a bright future!

Unfortunately, prom is still cancelled, despite a judge ruling Constance’s rights had been violated, and the parents running a private “ball” have not invited Constance and her date.

C’mon you guys, get writing! Show that support!

**update** And the winner is….  Britni, from Oh my God, that Britni’s Shameless.

Congrats, Britni!
