This is something I’d been meaning to write for some time, but it was only when I read MarriedWithSex’s article, “The Myth of the Porno Penis,” that I finally found the extra inspiration I needed. While MWS’s article is obviously meant to be humorous (and it is), I know a lot of people actually become quite angry over the unrealistic sex portrayed in the movies. What I want to know is, “Why?” As I see it, blaming porn movies for people’s unrealistic ideas about sex is akin to blaming violent movies for real life violence. You’ve got to apply common sense to your movie experiences.
Are all guys as well endowed, or can fuck as long, as male porn actors? Of course not. Do all women have shaved vulvas, enjoy facials and choking on cocks? Don’t be silly. But to go so far as some people do and make blanket statements that no women enjoy those things, or that no “real” guys are that well endowed is ridiculous. In fact, to say such things is as bad as the porno “myths” that these people rail against. Why is it either/or when it comes to porn’s dissenters? Sure, there are some porn staples that people don’t enjoy but there is a market for this stuff or it wouldn’t exist.
Personally, I don’t relish ass-to-mouth scenes but I realize there are people who do. They may be the exception to the rule but they do exist. I don’t claim that no one likes ass-to-mouth scenes. And I don’t set out to bust this so-called “myth.” You know what I do? I don’t watch those scenes. I fast forward through them or I stop the movie. I have never been given a facial but it’s something I fantasize about and love seeing in pornos. I’ve choked myself on dildos and vibrators because I wish to choke on a real cock. And, yes, some women do shave their vulvas completely bare like porn actresses (me included) and do not feel or look like prepubescent girls. I didn’t even start shaving because of pornos. I shave for the convenience, pure and simple. OK, and because I like the look and feel. But don’t you dare say there’s something wrong with me or my partners for enjoying my bare vulva. And don’t bitch and moan about how all the blame rests on pornos. If anything, those who protest the loudest arouse my suspicions.
If someone goes around thinking all of the sex acts performed in pornos are a part of everyone’s sexual repertoire is incredibly naïve and needs a huge reality check. But, again, you can’t blame the movies. They’re made for entertainment purposes only. Yes, there are educational videos starring porn actors (hello, Nina Hartley) but those are a different animal to straight-up porn movies. Learn the difference, folks. At the very least, drop your irrational anger and apply a sense of humor to porno viewing like MarriedWithSex has. Then perhaps you can unclench your sphincter muscle and enjoy pornos for what they are: fictionalized sex scenes performed by actors to inspire you to have great sex, either by yourself or with a partner.

Wow, I’m speechless and flattered to think that something I had written could fire someone up enough to write an excellent article like this one.

I agree that if you are watching porn you are watching it for the fantasy that is being portrayed and not the realism. That would be like watching Armageddon to determine the best way to stop a rogue asteroid from obliterating the earth.

With how fired up you got over The Myth Of The Porno Penis, I am scared about what our next article about What Porn Has Taught me will do to you.

    Thanks for the great read.

I think for some people, they do. One of my lab partners in senior-level biochemistry believed that the male G-spot was on the tip of the penis, that the female G-spot was “right below the clitoris”, and that the prostate didn’t exist.

He was very sure of what he knew because “he learned it from porn”.

Most people, I think know that most porn is very fake, but I think it’s still worth bunking for the sake of the few, like my lab partner, who don’t.

I know this will sound mean but I’m not sure if porn is to blame for the man’s misconceptions or if he’s just not all that bright. lol

Sorry, but I kind of have to disagree with you here, lady!

For some people, porn is their only exposure to sex ed. Many people learn about sex by watching mainstream porn. And it perpetuates false beliefs about not only what sex is like and how it works, but about the kind of sex that people (especially women) want to have.

Not every woman wants to perform oral sex or anal sex, yet those things (and, of course, vaginal sex) are a part of EVERY. SINGLE. scene in porn. Guys see this as the norm, when in reality, it’s not really a part of many people’s every day sex. Not only that, guys see the vigorous ass fucking that these girls can take, but the reality is that we really *can’t* do that. The movies make it look so easy, like it just slips in, pain free, no lube, and you can pound her ass like crazy and she’s gonna love it. They don’t see the deep colon enema, numbing agents, and various warm up toys that it takes to get to that point. And they could very well end up hurting their partner.

And you hardly ever see condoms used or safe sex practiced. It makes safer sex practices seem unsexy and unnecessary.

Some people just don’t have the social outlets and education to learn these thigns from other people, and if they think that porn is realistic, they may not realize that they should be researching things online to learn more, because they really think that what they’re learning is valid.

Is there a place for mainstream porn in the market? Of course. But I also think there need to be more realistic portrayals of sex out there, too (Comstock Films is doing a great job at this), as well as more educational value or disclaimers on some of the stuff I mentioned before (Tristan Taormino does a fabulous job with this).

Fair enough. You make some very valid points. And no need to apologize for disagreeing with me. lol
